How should one start a fatty liver diet plan and make it successful? First, you have to know what fatty liver is and what causes this condition. Fatty liver disease, or FLD, occurs when an uncontrollable amount of triglycerides, a kind of fat, accumulates in the liver. Through a process called steatosis, the fat replaces the liver cells. Several causes of FLD include excessive alcohol drinking, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and reactions to drugs and chemicals.

To guide you in your fatty liver diet plan, you should know about the foods that can help you improve the function of your liver, which can be damaged if you have FLD.

1. Antioxidants
Antioxidants can be found in various fresh fruits such as kiwi, apple, pear, carrot, dandelion, beetroot, celery and citrus. It can also be found in wheat grass and barley grass juice. So load up on these delicious fruits and eat them with your meals. In fact, eating fruits and vegetables with every meal is advisable.

2. Essential Fatty Acids
There are two kinds of fats – the bad and the good. The bad fats, including triglycerides, are unhealthy for the body. However, there are what we call essential fatty acids that are needed to build healthy membranes in every cell of the body. These fatty acids are needed for the liver to function.

You can find these essential fatty acids in seafood, fresh avocado, raw nuts and seeds (flaxseed, sunflower seeds), whole grains, legumes, green vegetables (eggplant and spinach), and fresh vegetable and seed oils (evening primrose oil, star flower oil). Seafood may be fresh, frozen, or canned such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, calamari, gem fish, and blue mussels. Legumes include peas, beans, and lentils.

3. Arginine
Arginine helps the liver in detoxifying ammonia, a toxic waste produced when protein is metabolized. It can be found in legumes, walnuts, oats, seeds, carob, and wheat germ.

4. Natural Sulfur Compounds
These compounds can be found in broccoli, garlic, onions, cauliflower, leeks, and eggs.
Your fatty liver diet plan would also work better if you choose organic foods and drink lots of water. Finally, do not forget to regularly exercise to help you shed the unhealthy fats.
